Joan Clark, a 32 year old lesbian field officer for the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, faced conflicting calls to resign in March and April. A Cincinnati divisional council initially refused to accept her resignation, inviting protests nationwide. After an agonizing session the council asked her to resubmit, but she declined.
