Convict Hoffler Escapes During Emergency Leave in Portsmouth

Convicted drug dealer Hubert E. Hoffler, jailed for drug conspiracy and facing a 40 year term, vanished during a one day emergency leave after visiting a lawyer's office in downtown Portsmouth. The escape prompted delayed alerts, an FBI warrant, and a call for scrutiny of prison officials. Hoffler had been released from the Richmond State Penitentiary and disappeared with guard Floyd J. Gilbert guiding him.

Policeman Injured in Shot at DC Police Headquarters

A District of Columbia police sergeant was shot through the shoulder by an officer in an adjoining room who did not know his gun was loaded. Sgt Milton J. Sismondo was admitted to Washington Hospital Center in good condition Wednesday night.
