James Mayhew is jailed in Winchester charged with maliciously shooting through a door at the Wymer home on Cedar Greek injuring a child. He claims it was a piney squirrel hunt. authorities say motive involved trouble between Mayhew and Wymer. Mayhew to have a magistrate hearing tomorrow before Justice Tavener.
The Brocato residence at 3801 Park Heights Avenue was damaged by a bomb after three letters demanded money. No one injured as porch and windows were wrecked and nearby homes also shattered. Letters warned not to inform authorities and threatened kidnapping of the children.
Herbert Allen Hartley three years old son of Mr and Mrs John A Hartley died after a twenty minute illness at home near Stephens City. Funeral July 2 at Refuge Church Rev O D Lambert officiated pallbearers were Harry Hartley Claude Hartley Orbie Grim Lucious Ritenour flowers carried by Margaret Grim Lucy Tobin Irene Togle Evelyn Oates. He was a bright loved child missed by family and neighbors.
The Shenandoah Valley Theatres Corporation plans a name contest for the repurposed Empire Theatre in Winchester as it reopens in September. Citizens may submit names with judges and The Star assisting. The aim is to gauge public interest in the change and choose a new title for the improved playhouse in Virginia.

Italian trans Atlantic flyers Captain Arturo Ferrarin and Major Carlo Del Prete completed a record 4 600 mile flight to Natal Brazil before fog and bad visibility forced a detour toward Rio de Janeiro. They landed ten miles north of Natal at Genipabu after misnavigation and heavy clouds impeded their course.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kate Woodward were held at five o clock yesterday afternoon. The residence was filled with mourners and flowers. Rev C A Freed of Grace Lutheran Church conducted the ceremony with hymns Peace Perfect Peace and Sometime We ll Understand sung by a quartet led by Hugh Duffey. Burial followed in the family lot at Mount Hebron Cemetery.
