A Virginia candidate for governor outlined his plan to reform the fee system if elected. He would push a maximum salary cap for fee officers, require state authority over their expenditures, and advocate full transparency of receipts with limited exceptions. He touted his business background as a basis for applying a financial approach to state governance. He also discussed wheat price forecasts, noting expert predictions of a rise and citing P V Ewing’s view that wheat could reach two dollars next winter due to supply limits and tariff effects.
The text discusses fixed prices in the country versus low priced Europe where American farm surplus is sold. It notes a promise this year to test Mr Hoover's idea and determine if a wheat tariff would raise domestic prices above those in other nations.
MR PLUMMER F JONES writes in Review of Reviews edited by Dr Albert Shaw that establishing a Southern Appalachian National Park in the Blue Ridge of Northern Virginia will unlock a vast historical storehouse for future generations and strengthen American spirit. He asserts Shenandoah National Park will gain broad approval from city dwellers across the East and Midwest as an invaluable asset.
The movement to place a Park in Virginia highlights the nation's historical shrines. Virginians fear overexposure. outsiders smile. The park would attract millions, boosting visits to Virginia sites tied to pivotal national events and expanding knowledge of the state's contributions.
Mr Jones outlines a proposed park centerpiece featuring a monument to Alexander Spotewood and the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe who helped settle Shenandoah Valley. He notes Civil War pages with Stonewall Jackson, Union and Confederate signals, Cedar Creek and New Market battles, Winchester’s 72 changes of hands, Sheridan’s ride, and Woodstock’s Revolutionary legacy at Peter Muhlenburg as nearby heritage.
Within a few miles of Harpers Ferry, scene of the John Brown raid, Charles Town where he was tried, and the Antietam battlefield lie Gettysburg, Staunton birthplace of Woodrow Wilson, and the Linville Creek homestead in Rockingham county where Thomas Lincoln, father of Abraham Lincoln, was born on January 5, 1778.
Nearby lies the birthplace of Cyrus Mc Cormick inventor of the reaper, Sam Houston a Texas fighter and first president, and John Sevier founder of Tennessee.
Mr Jones extols East of the Park as a premier National Park site linking to George Rogers Clark and Meriwether Lewis. He cites Lexington tombs of Lee and Jackson and Virginia birthplaces of Madison Monroe Tyler Clay Marshall Scott Taylor Randolph Maury, plus numerous Civil War battlefields and Monticello nearby. He argues the park blends historic significance with rugged scenery and waterfalls.
The Clifton Forge Review rebuts Roanoke World News support for Senator Mapp by noting his Senate record offered few reform bills beyond prohibition. It argues Mapp could have pushed anti liquor and welfare measures earlier, and that his alliance with prominent Democrats faded once they opposed him.
The article argues the Democratic candidate must defend the party regardless of nomination or defeat. It notes room for improvement in state affairs but says conditions are not as dire as portrayed. It mentions no shortage of funds and criticizes expenditures tied to carelessness or theft.
Fragmentary line notes a political context citing Mr Mapp seeking favorable treatment for appointments. It mentions preferred individuals but lacks full names or positions. The readable segment suggests a discussion of patronage or appointment influence without concrete details.
