The Fourth of July brought fireworks and a break in a 15 day heat wave with 101 degrees at Winchester. Cooler air moved in. no holiday traffic deaths in Winchester area, but local crashes injured several and fires occurred.
A driver fought a bee on the leg and swerved into a signpost as a bee vanished. Nearby churches rang bells for Independence Day in a Chamber of Commerce project, while 16 reported having no bells. Bobby Dick's cherry orchard suffered frost and a dry thunderstorm struck, sparking a tree fire fanned by lightning. Electric fuses were knocked out regionally.
The Associated Press reports the worst Fourth of July traffic toll in U.S. history with 559 deaths on highways over the holiday, surpassing 1963’s four day record. Drownings reach 208 and boating accidents claim 47 lives. The Safety Council had projected 510 to 610 deaths and notes Congress is poised to fund safety programs.
Minnesota endured severe storms Monday night with funnel clouds and tornadoes reported between Fargo North Dakota and St. Cloud. Winds up to 70 mph uprooted trees in St. Cloud while U S 10 east of town was blocked by fallen timber and Detroit Lakes hail pounded windows and cars.
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip rode through Belfast amid loyalist cheers on the final day of a Northern Ireland tour. A cement block damaged the Rolls Royce but was beaten out and painted, with a man arrested after being smuggled from a rebuilding site. National Guardsmen moved in to reinforce Omaha police in the near North Side after a third night of violence in the 24th and Lake streets area. Police reported 78 arrests, 10 juveniles, two officers injured, and looting or window smashing at about 10 businesses.
U S Navy fighter bombers attacked two torpedo boats off Haiphong early today. One Skyhawk was shot down and rescue helicopters evacuated the pilot. The day saw a record 91 multi plane missions against North Vietnam with 250 to 300 planes in raids on oil storage facilities near Hai Phong and Thanh Hoa.

Voters must file applications by Thursday midnight to her office or to the local precinct registrar. countywide, applications go to the precinct registrar. Ballots will be returned by Election Day and opened with others. registration books closed June 11 with no new registrations since.
A weak cold front will drift across Virginia today touching off thunderstorms in the southern part of the state while temperatures stay unusually high there.
CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP America's heaviest satellite a 29 ton rocket stage vaulted into orbit during an engineering test. The 17 story Saturn 1, most powerful US fired, lifted off at 10 53 a.m. EDT. The second stage ignited to reach a 118 mile high orbit despite a camera failure in the fuel tank. Bermuda station reported clear pictures and noted hydrogen remained stable with minor surface ripples. Officials said hours of analysis would determine success.

Two boys Ricky Green 14 and Jim my Green 9 from Alexandria are missing at Douthat State Park in Clifton Forge Virginia after leaving with their family for a five thirty p.m. hike. State police Forest Service searchers and volunteers scoured densely wooded mountains for traces with tracking dogs used twice but no results. The boys wore shorts and sneakers and one wore a T shirt. The family planned a weeklong stay at the park.
