Area Escapes Huge Highway Death Toll
The Winchester area saw several traffic crashes during the three day Fourth of July weekend but escaped the nationwide fatal toll. One local death occurred when 13 year old Donald Andrew Jenkins Jr of Berryville drowned near Elkton on Sunday afternoon. Injuries were sustained in other crashes though no other fatalities occurred. A total loss vehicle left the road but the driver was unhurt. The weather for the long weekend was good.

Rosenberger To Attend Democratic Convention From Winchester
Richard J. Rosenberger chairs Winchester Democratic Committee and will join three other Seventh District delegates bound for the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Virginia reports 22 holiday deaths across 78 hour weekend
The Associated Press notes Virginia tallied 22 accidental fatalities during the 78 hour Fourth of July weekend ending at midnight. Berryville report of 13 year old Donald A Jenkins Jr drowning Sunday afternoon in a pond near Elkton. He could not swim and was found hours after the 3:30 PM mishap. Born November 10 1946, he had served as a Berryville Evening Star carrier since January. Funeral Thursday at 2 PM at John H Enders Funeral Home with Rev Julian Orell officiating. Burial in Green Hill Cemetery.

Legion Post Robbed of $173 During Holiday Weekend
The American Legion Post Home on Rt. 7 was entered Sunday night and $173 in cash stolen. Frederick County Sheriff’s Office investigates.
