A long July 4 holiday weekend in Virginia saw 20 violent deaths recorded, with eight added on Monday. The AP report notes the total across the state and highlights incidents and locations involved.
The nation saw a record 393 traffic deaths during the three day Fourth of July period with 239 drownings and 772 total accident deaths. The toll includes multiple fatalities across Virginia with names such as Franklin Delano Lane and Harry Lee Shelton among the dead. A safety council forecast had predicted 380 deaths.
U S officials plan a formal reception in Hong Kong for three American POWs who sided with Communist forces and will cross from Red China on July 9. Lewis Griggs of Texas Otho Bell of Washington state and William Cowart of Georgia must face possible military or civilian trials.
At least seven people, many children, died when a Chicago bound 12 car passenger train struck a car at a grade crossing near Allen's Grove Wisconsin. The car carried 11 members of the Smith family with several children among the dead.

Five crewmen from Clovis New Mexico were killed when two Santa Fe freight trains collided head on near Car Denas 105 miles west of Clovis early today. One body recovered as flames trapped crew in cabs and rescuers could not reach them. About 25 cars derailed.
Washington traffic eased slightly as a walkout by bus and trolley workers entered its fifth day. Police reported 25 to 40 percent above normal traffic, while officials pressed for a settlement with Capital Transit as Wolfson remained unavailable amid Coast commitments.

After a Fourth of July heat wave reaching 96 degrees, area residents faced continuing high temperatures with 95 to 96 degree readings. No significant rain is in sight though isolated thundershowers possible. Pools and parks crowded as a large holiday crowd sought relief from the heat.
A Greyhound bus and an automobile collided on the Pennsylvania Turnpike at the Irwin interchange killing Doc M. Mosby and his wife Emma and their 22 month old son John of Universal Pennsylvania. Driver Samuel Ellison about 50 was in critical condition at Greensburg Hospital. Fred Clay Jr and three bus riders were injured. Police say the car backed up in the left lane as the bus followed and struck from the rear.
The Fourth of July weekend saw two drownings in local farm ponds, one in Frederick County and another in Warren County near Reliance. No highway fatalities were reported in Winchester, Frederick, or Clarke counties, despite multiple weekend crashes and 18 police tests. The Frederick County victim was 11 year old James William Miller of Reynolds Store, who drowned near the E L Luttrell Farm after being last seen at noon. He died about 2 pm, with a funeral planned after a Thursday service at Salem Methodist Church.
Extended forecast for Richmond Virginia shows temperatures 6 to 8 degrees above normal for July 5 through 10. Hot conditions prevail with rainfall totaling 0 to 4 inches in widely scattered afternoon or evening thundershowers.
