The Associated Press reports at least 739 Americans died during a 102 hour Independence Day weekend. Traffic crashes caused 458 deaths, 168 drowned, and 113 from other accidents, with 36 million cars expected to travel nationwide.
First Transparent apples arrived with E. W. Barr expecting a ship load this afternoon. Transpar ents sold for 4.50 on the morning market. Barr Packing House near Winchester Cold Storage received apples yesterday from Barton Orchard via Robert Morrison. Henry Shryock notes crates average very good size. Boyer Bros. of Woodstock and Ray Robinson Orchard Kernstown contributed loads. H. W. Butler Packing House may open Friday while the Butlers pick cherries at Nicodemus Orchard Welltown Pike.
South End Fire Company plans a drill on Thursday July 6 at 7 o clock to prepare units for marching in Mt Jackson on July 1. All are urged to attend. H M Layman president.
Twin brothers C. Douglas Brown and Leslie M. Brown began as carriers for The Winchester Evening Star in 1904. They later owned B. and C. Bakery and held a share in the J. Howard Cather Co. Dodge agency. They delivered papers daily from 5 AM, earning 1.20 weekly at peak, and helped build local newspaper history alongside The Star and Morning News Item.
The Winchester Business and Professional Woman's Club sponsors a Tuesday swimming program for 7 to 15 year olds from 10 a.m. to 12 noon July 11 through August 29, 1950. About 150 children will be chosen by a committee with ties to the club Salvation Army and Highland Avenue Church. A Willow Lawn Pool pass plus 5 cents covers transit. children must bring their own swimsuits and donations of secondhand suits are invited by calling 3246 or 3218 or leaving at 104 South Braddock Street by Saturday.

The toll includes 12 highway deaths, seven drownings, and five from miscellaneous tragedies, with Earl Hardy a 15 year old passenger among the latest traffic fatality. Charles Rachunek and his 42 year old son drowned when their boat caught fire near Smithfield. Mrs Rachunek survived after rescue and life preserver toss by Jacob Bulifant.
A 33 minute downpour dropped 1.45 inches of rain in the city on Monday afternoon, chilling temperatures from 91 to 76 and causing scattered damage including a attic fire from a lightning strike at 2 West James Street. Utilities logged outages and downed aerials while sewers overflowed on several streets.

Army officials from Fort Meade arrived in Berryville to view a decomposed body found by George Carter in the Shenandoah River near Castleman’s Ferry. The clothing showed an Army uniform with no identifying marks. Sheriff Smallwood noted driftwood debris washed ashore in mid May entangling the body, and coroner Dr. Frank Tappan said the remains likely floated for a long period with no signs of foul play. North Korean tanks broke through toward Suwon trapping U S infantry on the central Korean front. Anxious air officers awaited clearer weather to unleash warplanes against the invaders as General MacArthur offered no update on the setback.
Police investigate three break ins during Independence Day holiday. Bond Bros. at Fairfax Lane and Cameron St was entered by roof access and upstairs window, Snider Store at 323 Cameron St by door panel and wall, and Sherwin Williams Co. at 28 EB Piccadilly via a pried back window with no items reported missing.
The outlook covers Virginia from today through Sunday with temperatures about two to three degrees above normal and little daily variation.
