Virginia Leads Nation in Cost of U S Relief

Virginia faced the sharpest proportion of relief costs to total expenditures in the nation for May 1934 to January 1935. FERA data show Virginia administrative costs at 20 percent of $7.63 million in relief outlays, versus a 10.7 percent national average. State Relief Administrator William A. Smith defended the program in Richmond, inviting proof of a simpler method and noting critics cited broader system concerns, not just Virginia.
