Powerout hit San Francisco as substation fails and line explodes
About a third of San Francisco lost power for nearly two hours after a substation transformer failed and another component exploded. Some western Montana and parts of Idaho Wyoming and South Dakota also lost supply when lightning struck a central transmission line. About 21 000 customers were affected in San Francisco with service restored by 1 46 a m PDT. Officials blamed equipment malfunction rather than sabotage and noted transmission line safety mechanisms failed to act.
