Wheat Legumes May Aid Farmers Under Soil Program

Under the Soil Conservation Program a 1936 farmer must divert acres from soil-depleting crops to soil-conserving crops. If wheat is harvested in 1936 but grown with a legume or followed by one, the harvested area is counted as soil-depleting for most purposes, except that half may be counted toward 1935 seeding of soil-conserving crops to meet minimum and diverted acreage requirements.

Secretary of Agriculture

Revision in Ruling on Soil-Conserving Crop Seeding Standards

The old rule required six acres diverted to soil-conserving crops with no harvest of soil-depleting crops in 1936 to earn full credit. Actual diversion must occur elsewhere to qualify for a grant.
