Chicago July 1. The National Safety Council urged a safer Independence Day celebration with a plan to reduce holiday accidents. It advised starting trips early, driving moderately, avoiding fireworks, not driving after drinking, watching sunburn, and swimming with caution to ensure a safe return.
Indians and forest service workers recovered Medill McCormick's body from a cliff on Sandia Peak after an eight day search. Mrs Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms, his mother, faced renewed grief as authorities confirmed the death from a hazardous expedition that began June 22.
New York July 1 Pro promoter Mike Jacobs said he was open minded about a heavyweight title bout in September between Joe Louis and Max Baer. He commented on Chicago reports quoting Julian Black that Louis needed rest and would forgo the September match.
Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus unloaded at Sarasota winter quarters ending a summer tour cut short by labor trouble. Personnel manager McCormick Steel said the circus would not be bothered by strikes on its next tour because no union men will be employed.

A 62 day field study tour by 20 students and faculty from New Jersey State Teachers College Monclair will cover 26 states from New Jersey to the Pacific coast. Edgar C Bye directs the trip with lectures by geography history literature and social science faculty. A staff nurse and two stewards care for health and comfort while a photographer documents the journey for post trip study.
Chairman May of Kentucky said the establishment of a single department of national defense would be the main item on the House Military committee's 1939 legislative program. He urged closer Navy and Army cooperation including merging air forces. Army and Navy officials oppose the move.

London July 1 A Bow Street Magistrate released Count Haugwitz Reventlow husband of Barbara Hutton after he promised not to carry firearms or see his estranged wife. He posted bail of 1000 pounds with a 1000 pound surety and must keep away from the countess while his son Lance remains ward.
Barbara Webb renamed Mrs Schuyler Larkin crowned woman vice chair of the Frederick County Republican Party by the executive committee. She has been active in the party across several states and will aid Eugene Anderson in organizing local women Republicans and strengthening the party structure. M K Sandy of Stephens City and Robinson hold other leadership posts with Bryant Stotler as secretary.
Marshall L Farmer of 703 Berryville Avenue built a notable autograph collection within a year. The library will display the framed autographs in the reference room with loans from Farmer. Notables include Alf Landon Garner Carter Glass Byrd Mae West Lowell Thomas Hoover LaGuardia and others from film politics radio and Boy Scouts.
Trial Justice A. J. Tavenner and Assistant Trial Justice Erle Edwards are renewed for four years starting today. Both have posted bonds of $500, officially qualifying for their second term in office.

Williams with five eight member subcommittees will report July 28 29 to the state committee as the General Assembly empowers the Supreme Court to regulate practice and organize a Virginia State Bar.
Four Troop 5 scouts under C S Stine called at The Star office to request prints of a photo showing them atop Signal Knob. Frank Turgeon shot the picture from an airplane on Thursday June 23. The hikers Fred Brown Sonner 14 John Rosenberger 13 Randolph Keister 14 Harold Updyke 15 spent the night atop the Knob and cooked three meals outdoors during their hike.
Seven men died and several were injured in a rock fall 3,000 feet underground at the Praco coal mine of the Alabama By-Products Company in Birmingham. Two crews tried to cut through a rock ledge separating the main workings from the fallen area.

The Navy and Army would add ships and personnel while railroads may receive federal support.
