Russian war dispatches say heavy T 34s and other tanks breached German fortifications west of Voronezh and advanced toward Kursk. Front reports claim nine German divisions trapped, with Kursk Belgorod and Kharkov under pressure and tens of thousands of Axis prisoners taken.
Fort George Wright Washington January 30 Major General Robert Olds urged that the right to build long range aircraft should be granted only to nations with non aggressive histories. He said America can claim such a history and called for postwar military air patrols to safeguard global air commerce and deter foreign use of air power.
Allied fighters and bombers attacked the Axis held port of Bizerta and targets in the dock area. Bombers hit the Tunis airfield and an Axis convoy between Sicily and Tunisia. Eight enemy aircraft were shot down and five more destroyed in other operations.
Mr Winchester urges residents to report glass on streets to aid removal. Two pedestrians collected large amounts near Boscawen and Cameron from a broken truck tail light. Cars drove over it, pushing into snow. drivers should have noticed and cleaned up.
Rodney M. Coggin of East Coast Telephones said the northern neck including Colonial Beach and Warsaw suffered extensive damage from a deadly sleet storm. Colonial Beach was isolated for 24 hours with roads blocked and utilities disrupted. Water supply was restored by pumping water from an artesian well. Coggin described widespread tree damage and a 60 mile weather front from the Potomac to Richmond.
Richmond drama as Fifth Naval District blocks sailor liquor ration book registrations. Army posts register personnel. sailors to buy once stores reopen next Thursday. Virginia liquor board estimates 210000 to hold books. 300000 may register by Wednesday night. Registration pressures raise fears of limited rations and scarce books and forms through next week.
The annual Frederick County Cooperative Farm Bureau meeting has been postponed from this afternoon to Saturday at 1 PM in the High School auditorium. Edward A. O Neal president of the American Farm Bureau Federation is expected to speak in Winchester on February 13. Postponement due to deep snow.
Washington January 30 The Office of Price Administration allowed increases for fruit berry and certain grape wines due to higher material costs. Increases target high acid berries twelve cents per gallon low acid berries sixteen cents per gallon fruit wines including apple plum and apricot six cents per gallon table wine blends with 40 percent California grape wine six cents per gallon.
State and local police warn children against hitching sleds to motor cars. Officers say drivers can be charged with reckless driving for allowing boys to do it. Chief of Police ce Hollis is enforcing penalties and holding offenders. A trooper reported several boys near the rubber plant attempting it.
Mrs. Fred Pope of Berryville reports her son Sat. Ralph W. Pope, 26, missing since May 7, writes from near Manila in February, and she remains confident he is safe. Ralph’s letter arrived August 31, while another son Janey Lee Pope, 20, is in England and a third son Robes Mae Pope, 22, heads overseas.
A Frederick Circuit Court grand jury adjourned without completing its investigation into Edward Clark's case. It was ordered to reconvene on February 13 after summoning an additional witness. Clark is identified by officers as the driver linked to the December 23, 1942, crash that killed Violet Houshell near Winchester on the Front Royal turnpike. Snow kept two witnesses from attending. jurors named include J. Fred Thwaite Walter Anderson Alfred Snapp H. A. Snapp and P. E. Lineburg.
Prolonged and violent tremors shook Guayaquil causing building cracks and debris. Casualties feared though not confirmed. Shocks disrupted Quito lines and spread to Cuenca Loja Manabi. Fordham seismograph in New York logged two quakes at 1 40 58 and 1 47 19 a m from a distant origin.
President Roosevelt, turning 61, remains vigorous while directing America through World War II. His Casablanca flight and talks with Liberia and Brazil’s leaders mark bold wartime initiatives. Health appears sound with fewer colds than in some years, though aging is visible in hair and lines.
Sportsmen today urged the public to feed the birds until the snow melts so quail and other birds can forage again. Fears persist that quail will suffer unless food is provided. In Winchester some sportsmen plan action though rural roads are poor. Farmers can help by scattering grain in sheltered areas for the birds.
Ensign Albert K. Earnest of Richmond receives two Navy Cross equivalents for bold air action in the Battle of Midway. He flew a damaged torpedo bomber back to base after being wounded while leading an attack on an enemy carrier. The gold star signified a second Navy Cross. Continued on page 2.
British bombers struck the German submarine base at Lorient in western France last night causing heavy bombs to fall though clouds limited visible damage. Four bombers are missing, signaling a forceful raid amid ongoing Bay of Biscay U-boat attacks. A German air raid on the English southeast coast killed a woman and her husband, with two neighbors also murdered.
London reports that Mosquito bombers struck Berlin to delay Goering as he prepared to address the tenth anniversary of Hitler’s rise to power. The raid caused muffled explosions and a delayed start, while Goering pledged final victory and warned of a spring offensive.
The Office of Defense Transportation issues Exemption Order OTD 21-3 effective January 1 1943 easing inspection record keeping for fleet operators of buses and taxi cabs by exempting maintenance of inspection records on the Certificate of War Necessity while requiring tire records. Operators must obtain tire inspector certification on Form R 47 and keep tire records showing serial or brand wheel position installation dates and other tire data and inspections still required every 60 days or 5000 miles.
Deep snow forces rural carriers to wade through drifts to reach mailboxes. Residents on rural routes are urged to clear snow for easy access. Snow depths vary from two to three inches more in the county west, with 14 inches typical in outlying areas. Northern Virginia reports intact power lines while Richmond area needs extra lineman help. Ray Curtis, veteran Winchester lineman, assisted Richmond crews yesterday afternoon.
Mary Lou Steele secretary of the Winchester Air Raid Wardens and Fire Watchers asks Sector Wardens for an up to date list of Wardens and Watchers. The message urges Sector Wardens to compile a new roster and send it to Miss Steele by Wednesday.
