Earliest Known Written Psalm Discovered at Ras Shamra
Yale professor Dr. Julian Obermann announced the discovery of a 1500 B C cuneiform tablet at Ras Shamra identifying the earliest written Psalm. The tablet shows an oral liturgy with antiphonal responses used in public worship at the temple, suggesting Hebrew psalmody originated near Palestine. The find links Cananite literature to pre-Christian Hebrew religious forms and places the Psalm’s roots in a mid second millennium context.
