Byrd Tax Reduction Bill Status Fray in Senate

Hurricane Kills 12 in Fiji Islands Suva Devastated

A hurricane with 150 mph winds struck Suva Fiji killing at least 12 people and injuring hundreds. The storm collapsed concrete buildings, wrecked harbor installations, destroyed hundreds of houses, and cut power and telephone service. Information from outer islands was scarce.

Contract Awarded For Rocket Ships

The Navy awarded a contract to Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Co. of Seattle, Washington for a new line of rocket ships designed for close support of beach head attacks. The ships will be 1,200 tons, 243 feet long, and 38 1/2 feet wide with rapid fire rocket launchers as main armament.

Delaney Given 1 Year Sentence and Fines in Tax Case

Eleven Bodies Found After City Fire Tragedy

In Minneapolis a fire at an ice crusted edge of the loop apartment building killed eleven occupants. Fire Chief Malmquist said search teams expect to recover six more bodies. Firemen labored in subfreezing temperatures using floodlights and a wrecking crane to reach the ruins. The initial victims included a six year old boy and a young girl found among crib springs with a doll. The Red Cross lists six adults, two teens, and nine children as missing. All victims were third floor residents two blocks from downtown.
