Government To Seek To Recover Refunded Taxes
Washington officials said the Agriculture Department will seek to recover processing taxes refunded to processors. Two options are proposed Congress retroactive taxation or an excess profits levy. Retroactive taxes would cover revenue from the old tax period to its Supreme Court invalidation with refunds to some taxpayers and not to those whose funds were court ordered returned. The excess profits plan targets about 180 million dollars in taxes refunded after the rice millers decision.
