An ex serviceman, Joseph Robert Cather Jr. of Winchester, was arrested after attempting to rob Hudson's Grocery near Ninevah, Virginia. He held a gun to his head for 20 minutes before Lt. Joseph C. Ritter and State Warden T. J. Starrett coaxed him to surrender. Cather fled, then returned and was booked for the attempted holdup. He said he acted because he needed money for work.
