British troops with tank support clash with Egyptian police in Ismailia for six hours. About 42 police and 3 British soldiers die, with 58 Egyptians and 13 British wounded. Egyptian cabinet meets amid fears of breaking diplomatic ties as Egypt demands British withdrawal from the canal zone.
Temperatures moderated over the midwest today after the coldest weather of the season yesterday with subzero readings in parts of the north central region. Arctic air spread eastward to the Atlantic coast as readings rose 20 to 40 degrees from the Central Plains to the Appalachians while the south stayed fairly mild.

Gen James A. Van Fleet, commander of the Eighth Army, was forced to ditch his plane on an abandoned frontline airstrip during a blizzard. He and three officers trudged through snow to a road, flagged down a jeep, and reached headquarters after a tense, cold ride.
Senator McMahon of Connecticut withdrew his name from the Illinois Democratic presidential primary to aid President Truman's re election prospects.
