City did not pay dead woman's funeral expenses
Lula Montgomery, a colored woman, says in a statement to The Star that Edith Holmes’s burial costs and medical care were paid by Lula herself. She supplied receipts from the physician and undertaker and claims city authorities contributed nothing. Lula knew Holmes only through her daughter and cared for Holmes after she fell ill on January 11 until her death.
