Warmer temperatures raised fears of massive runaway ice floes on the jammed Mississippi River. The risk appeared too late to save damaged Southern crops and did little to ease a natural gas shortage in the East.
Dr James C Dunstan of the State Corporation Commission said Virginia's gas supply has stabilized and should last through February on a day to day basis. He cited imports from Canada, shifts to alternative fuels, and more gas transfers as reasons for the improvement, while noting February remains uncertain with winter length.
President Carter opens his White House tenure welcoming his outsiders network with four receptions and a Cabinet nomination turn, while Ford departs and Cardi events unfold. The inaugural parade featured a walk down Pennsylvania Avenue with Amy Carter as Rosalynn and the Carters mingle at seven inaugural balls nationwide.
North of Winchester Memorial Hospital residents voiced fears at City Hall about closing 147 feet of Stonewall Ave onto Stewart St to make way for a parking garage. The five member board of viewers must report to City Council by Feb 2, with final action pending council approval and financing.
