Hoffa trial begins with strong security as Teamsters leader Hoffa faces jury selection in a crowded district courtroom. Jurors are being sworn in, with motions anticipated delaying full jury picks while guards and officials maintain order.
In Formosa, a major quake left 110 dead and 479 injured with seven missing. Nationalist Chinese and U.S. aid officials began recovery as damage spread through southern areas while Taipei reported only minor effects.
A low pressure area centered over the region spurred thunderstorms across Virginia today. Clearing skies are expected as the system moves away, bringing improving conditions by evening. Highs and lows not specified in the readable text.

In Manila AP dispatch Macapagal reports progress toward reviving Maphilindo and settling Indonesia Malaysia tensions. He says the Philippines will persist in peace efforts and a peaceful settlement, as Kennedy sees a good chance of solving the crisis after talks with Sukarno. Continued on Page 14.
Radio WINC personnel and local groups helped raise 1860 for the March of Dimes during a three day telethon at Leodackson Restaurant. 153 items were auctioned by phone with bidders notified by telephone. Remaining items held at Blue Ridge Collection Agency, 133 W. Boscawen St. Checks to March of Dimes, P O Box 15, Winchester. Next event is the Mothers March across county and city streets.
In Washington AP report President Johnson calls for broader restraints than Khrushchev proposed, urging agreement to bar force to alter access to Berlin and to end the arms race. He outlines an omnibus negotiation framework among the US, USSR and other nations toward disarmament and peaceful settlement.
Tanganyika soldiers mutinied but returned to their barracks after President Julius Nyerere spoke to the nation. A few hundred troops held Tanganyikan officers as hostages for 12 hours and about 30 British officers were seized. He blamed a misunderstanding and said the matter was settled after his mediation. Local Africans allegedly looted during the unrest.
London reports that disgruntled Tanganyika army troops again escaped barracks and may have taken control of Dar es Salaam airport. Commonwealth Secretary Duncan Sandys told the House of Commons that recent chatter indicated the situation was deteriorating.
About 50 U.S. government employees and Peace Corps volunteers are in Tanganyika. The U.S. Embassy in London received word that, so far as is known, all Americans are safe. The group includes around 25 Peace Corps members working on a road-building project and a teaching program in the area.
Yale psychologist Dr Roy Schafer testified that Jack Ruby shows impaired brain function and should undergo a thorough examination. He examined Ruby for nine and a half hours in December using standard tests as part of Ruby’s bid for bond release ahead of his murder trial for the killing of Lee Harvey Oswald.
Large search expands from Catalina Channel as Barbara Keith 42 from Hartford vanished at 10 000 feet during a Santa Catalina Island race. Planes and ships comb Ensenada area and inland coast for hours with no trace. Keith known as a balloon and parachute flyer is the only grandmother pilot in the group.
Panama prepares to dispatch Miguel J. Moreno Jr as ambassador to the United States to seek a renewal of talks over the Canal Zone dispute. Moreno, a former foreign minister with a hard line stance, will leave for Washington after briefing by President Roberto Chiari. The aim is to salvage peace efforts following U.S. envoy Edwin M. Martin's diplomatic break.
The Preaching Mission began at Market Street Methodist Church with a near full house. Dr. Carlyle Marney of Myers Park Baptist Church Charlotte NC spoke on Life Hemmed In and will lead nightly 7:30 p.m. sessions. Dr. E T Clark of First Baptist presided. Marney also led the 11 o'clock sermon. Luncheon devotions start at First Presbyterian with Mrs. Lacy and Marney alternating as speakers.
In his first economic report to Congress President Johnson predicts record prosperity in 1964 if Congress acts on tax cuts and trade expansion. He cautions against inflationary price rises despite a 44 percent rise in corporate profits and urges ongoing price and cost settlements while planning an early warning system for inflation. He cites a $600 billion GNP and $400 billion personal income milestones in 1963, projects a $623 billion GNP in 1964, and details proposed legislation including higher overtime penalties and federal aid to upgrade education.
