Four desperados seize five guards and hold 15 inmates in a Massachusetts state prison cell block entering a second day. A National Guard tank arrived as authorities consider options while food is allowed for guards and one elderly guard shows improvement.
Members at the January meeting heard a lecture on firefighting equipment and safety. A American LaFrance representative stressed wearing helmets boots and raincoats. The group noted new raincoats and a helmet and announced upcoming nominating and election timelines.
Winchester police search for a purse snatcher who grabbed a 64 year old woman’s pocketbook near her home on Braddock Street last night. The victim Mrs Gussie Dyke sustained a fractured right arm and forehead injury. the purse was recovered later with missing billfold and identification cards.
Britain mobilized about 30 helicopters and planes to drop food and medicines to over 10,000 people isolated by 20-foot snowdrifts in Caithness and Sutherland. At least 20 deaths were reported across several countries amid ongoing blizzards and floods.

Joseph De Maio 35 an ex convict was arrested in New Jersey after a chance pickup and held for Connecticut authorities on a charge of killing Celia Cienski 20 whose nude battered body was found in an icy canal in Windsor Locks Conn De Maio said I didn t mean to do it and later admitted attacking Cienski after a double date with her sister Ann 22 and companion Gerald Celette 34 surrendered in Newark Conn authorities to arraign them on fugitive charges.
The Winchester Frederick County Red Cross reports six Bloodmobile visits in 1954 collecting 747 pints of whole blood. Memorial Hospital used 1241 pints that year. Donor groups and leaders praised. 156 new donors increased total givers to 2 364 since 1948. Local residents contributed 68 percent of donations.
More than 200 Communist warplanes attacked the Nationalists' Tachens Islands in what US and Chinese sources described as a heavy air raid and a possible prelude to invasion. Yikiangshan was reportedly captured with claims of rapid victory by Peiping and the People's Daily praising modern military technique.
Secretary of State Dulles told United Nations Secretary Dag Hammarskjold that the United States will abstain from direct action that could hinder UN efforts to win the release of American airmen held in Red China. Hammarskjold urged restraint and possible release through UN channels.
