The Frederick County Education Association urged the School Board to raise starting salaries for B S degrees to 7 500 and increment pay for master’s degree holders by 200 annually. They seek health coverage, smaller class sizes of 25, and more special needs classes.
Astronaut James Irwin said a joint US Soviet space mission could be ready in under three years. NASA officials have discussed the venture with the Russian space program and a docking mission with the Soyuz crew looks very promising.
About 2,200 radar, navigational aids and communications technicians began a 24 hour nationwide strike affecting 116 airports. Only emergency service remains. air traffic controllers still at risk. The union warns a contract rejection could trigger further action. Parliament may be recalled if negotiations fail.
North Vietnamese MIG jets fired three missiles at two U S fighter bombers near the Laotian border within 100 miles of Hanoi but missed. US spokesmen said the encounter followed a similar incident three days earlier as warplanes operated in force. casualties were not reported.
In the Bering Sea near St Matthew Island the Soviet Lamut and Kolyvan resisted boarding as the Storis pursued for four hours. A warning shot was fired across the Lamut bow but no shots were exchanged. The vessels were escorted toward Adak with additional Coast Guard support.
Claude O. Frye 55 of 310 Smithfield Ave announces he will seek the Democratic nomination for mayor of Winchester on a platform to clean up the town and cut taxes. Frye has worked 13 years for the Frederick Farm Bureau and had not held office before. He announced last night to a radio station. Mayor William M. Battaile completes his second four year term and may not seek re election. Democratic chairman William Shendow says the party welcomes participation and highlights potential candidates including City Councilmen Stewart Bell James Fleming H William Butler and Ren B. A Winchester Democratic Committee meets tonight at 7 30 in City Hall. Shendon notes a Democratic mass meeting to nominate candidates will occur between Feb 7 and March 7.
The Bering Sea clash between two Soviet fishing vessels marks the fourth incident souring U S Soviet ties in two weeks. Earlier, Capt. Elmer Alderfer was assaulted at Riga airport, Merab Kurashvila's case prompted a U S response, and U S Rep. James Scheuer was expelled after a Moscow visit.
In Gwelo Rhodesia tens of thousands of blacks clash with police burning a cinema and welfare center. Police fire tear gas and use dogs as crowds of about 8 000 defy dispersal efforts. A Rhodesian rifle unit in battle dress patrols the streets as unrest continues.
Congress opens the 1972 session with three civil rights bills on the Senate calendar and action on foreign aid in the House. Key items include job discrimination and school busing debates, women’s rights consideration, EEOC enforcement powers, a $23 billion higher education bill, and a constitutional equal rights amendment for women. The House also advances a $2.7 billion foreign aid authorization amid end to major House Senate maneuvering.
Rep. Bella Abzug accuses President Nixon of flouting a 1971 law by not setting a withdrawal date for U.S. forces in Indochina. She cites escalation of bombing in North Vietnam and ongoing actions in Laos and Cambodia and says Nixon has not negotiated in good faith in Paris.
The White House plans congressional action to force 13 000 longshoremen back to work after a renewed West Coast port strike. Officials say legislative remedy may be required, while talks failed to avert the shutdown at 24 ports.
