Police report two children Pamela Harrison three and Martha Ann Harrison eighteen months died when playing with a stove started a house fire in Richlands. Their mother Mrs. Harrison was hospitalized with severe burns and the father was away.
Richmond report notes Winchester delegate Alson H. Smith is appointed to the House Appropriations Committee with subcommittee duties on retirement. Front Royal's Ray mond R. Guest Jr. shifts from Finance to maintain roles on roads internal navigation and conservation committees. 17th District secures representation on both money committees as session planning begins.
In Richmond at Capitol Square, E Blackburn Moore the long time Speaker of the House waited after John N Dalton's inauguration and noted the Byrd statue bears his influence through many sculptor consultations. He found initials hidden on the statue but not his, and beneath the sculptor's signature the initials EBM appeared.
Weather hindered travel as Winchester police logged transportation related vandalism. Last week a truck left on the old Acme lot lost three chains valued over 100 dollars. Also three batteries disappeared from tractors and equipment at 560 N Loudoun St on the Mid Atlantic Equipment Company site.
Snow accumulations reach six inches at lower elevations and up to ten inches in the mountains with heavy weather advisories in effect. Temperatures will run in the teens to mid twenties with highs in the thirties in many areas. Extended outlook calls for mixed rain and snow with cooler nights through the weekend.
Multiple defendants pled innocent last week in Warren County Circuit Court with trial dates set. Walter Butler faces a March 3 trial for shooting Charles Peyton. Leonard and Robert Cameron Jr. await May 12 for a joint trial on bodily injury charges.
Creosote buildup from a wood stove caused a house trailer fire on Rt. 608 near Gainesboro. Fire Chief Red Williamson said the stove pipe vented the stove and about 500 dollars in damage was reported. Volunteers responded shortly after 6 a.m. and returned by 7 a.m.
