Three Children Die in Fire East of Orange County
A dawn blaze destroyed a two story nine room home on State Rt. 20 killing John Haid age five Catherine age three and Gary eight months. The Haid children were trapped upstairs while parents Joanne Louise Thomas and three other siblings escaped. Fire officials cited an oil stove explosion as the probable cause. neighbor W J Lee recalled screams and rescue attempts. Firemen recovered the bodies around 7:30 a.m. and homeowner Bernard Birtsinger said he escaped with minor injuries.
