In Berryville Virginia Garfield Osler 34 and Jane Kirby Oiler 31 were gunned down at dawn in their Boom Road home. Police call the case murder and death by own action. Children Garfield Jr 10 and Harry 5 witnessed the tragedy.
County Treasurer Harry McCann told the Board of Supervisors a probable $4,000 deficit may occur on July 1 despite a 10 cent tax rate increase. The December financial statement showed $10,113.08 in the general fund with miscellaneous small credits and ongoing costs. Judge Philip Williams praised county records indexing work and urged funds for repairing old records and copying the aging marriage book.
Berryville Stockholders of the Horse Show Association reelected the same board at the annual session in the Court House. A deficit of over 600 dollars was reported for last year due to higher costs more classes and fewer exhibitors. The meeting drew 380 shares represented out of 541 outstanding.
State Highway Commissioner Kenneth N. Gilpin announced plans for reconstructing two Riverton area bridges in Boyce Virginia. A $1 200 000 appropriation is prepared and submitted to the Federal Bureau of Roads for final approval. The Shenandoah south fork bridge will be four lanes to handle John Marshall Highway reroute traffic while the North Fork bridge will have three lanes. Much of the funds come from the Federal Grade Crossing Elimination Project. Construction is slated to begin in spring pending federal clearance.
Washington January 13 The inter-American neutrality committee meets in Rio de Janeiro to shape rules for the security zone to deter belligerents. It plans measures to starve warships of supplies, bar submarines, and curb belligerent action within the zone following the Graf Spee incident off Uruguay.
In Virginia, Attorney General Abram P. Staples finds Charles E. Burks eligible for the Sixth Judicial Circuit bench since Section 45 applies to members only. Burks plans to seek nomination at the General Assembly caucus, with Democratic support. A writ of election will follow, posting notices across 33 polling places in Lynchburg and Campbell County to call a special election.

New York reports Patrolman Fitzpatrick complains the Murphy family is too musical. Rita Murphy age 15 plays piano while the mother’s age near 18, a trumpet enters the scene. An orchestra forms with piano and other instruments, prompting Fitzpatrick’s wife to have a nervous breakdown. Magistrate Giorgio asks a probation officer to find a solution.
Two navy airplanes collide in mid air over a southern California desert injuring none of the survivors. Radioman first class James Addison Crowson is found dead in a burned wreck near a hill. Ensign Walter Glen Barnes Jr is reported safe, Harold Nathan Funk is hospitalized with injuries, and others including Paul E. Dickson Charles W. Post and Walter Jackson recover after reaching help.
Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Virginia officers will address Winchester Commandery No. 12 at the George Washington Hotel on Tuesday night January 16 at 6 30. Mayor Charles R. Anderson gives welcome, Deputy Grand Commander Samuel Luckett replies, with Grand Commander William A. Wolfe and Grand Junior Warden Thomas W. Hooper also speaking. D. Brady W. Largent acts as toastmaster and committee chair. A magic act by Vin Carey closes the program.
Soviet Russian bombers attacked southern Finland with strikes in Helsinki killing two and wounding four while damaging several buildings. Hyvinkaa north of Helsinki also faced two raids as weather aided the assaults lasting about two hours with air alarms across a wide area.
Stockholm dispatches report partial Soviet withdrawal from Liinahamari Arctic port and Finnish forces cutting the Salmijarvi road. Reports say 40 000 Red Army troops in sector with reinforcements from Sweden and Denmark. Finns reinforce and plan to encircle. Parachute drops noted as fresh Russian troops arrive.
