Intense winter temperatures grip the region with Berryville recording 13 below zero and Winchester area at 1 below. Weather officials warn of more cold and possible snow while five day outlook shows temperatures below normal and precipitation anticipated this weekend.
Virginia Senator Harry F. Byrd Jr. travels from Cairo to Ankara to press for direct Israel United Arab Republic talks after a frank meeting with Egypt Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad. Byrd plans stops in Cyprus and Tel Aviv before returning to Washington and notes increased Soviet influence in the region.
A massive winter storm sweeps the midcontinent with snow sleet and freezing rain while the Northeast endures record subzero cold. Power outages afflict North Carolina as crews race to repair lines amid forecast sleet. Temperatures plunge below zero from the Dakotas to New York with heavy snowfall in Des Moines and Omaha. Boston declares a critical cold state and opens a 24 hour center for heat-strapped families.
Pangborn Corporation, a Carborundum subsidiary, is building a 100 by 200 foot steel plant on a 4.4 acre site in the Industrial Park between Fabritek and Terry Industries. Completion expected by April with a $125,000 cost. The facility will produce fabric tubes and bags for dust and fume collectors under the Filter Media Division.
U S Ambassador Bowles vows to avoid aggression against Cambodia while the Soviet Union quickly opposes any deal restricting Vietnamese use of Cambodian territory. The joint communique notes American respect for Cambodian sovereignty and neutrality, and Washington backs stronger support for the International Control Commission to supervise Cambodian neutrality.
Virginia lawmakers adjourned until Monday after Gov Godwin's 3 billion budget was introduced. Local option liquor measures, hearings set for late January, and a constitutional convention vote were discussed amid budget talks. Debate split over statewide referendum. Washington reports North Vietnam is sending larger numbers of troops into Laos near the DMZ to reinforce embattled units in South Vietnam. Officials expect intensified attacks on U S and allied outposts in the northern and central highlands, with 32,000 to 50,000 troops involved and additional units filtering in.
The U S Marine presence in two northern provinces around the DMZ rose to about 35000 as the 5th and 3rd regiments shift north. Intelligence indicates the North Vietnamese may target Quang Tri and Thua Thien in the spring offensive, with coastal Da Nang area units redeployed to widen coverage.
