A 14 month study by a 10 member federal panel concludes smoking greatly raises the risk of early death and is a major cause of lung cancer and chronic lung disease. The report urges corrective action and notes quitting reduces risk, with stronger links found in men and similar trends for women.
A Loudoun County youth, Walter R. Poston 22, of Bluemont, was critically injured in a late night non collision crash 142 miles east of Winchester on Route 7. He suffered a fractured skull, severe facial lacerations and chest cuts and was taken to Winchester Memorial Hospital. hospital officials reported slight improvement today.
The weather outlook warns of possible precipitation with snow or rain and a high near 40. Residents are advised to prepare by grabbing warm boots and a snow shovel as conditions may turn wet and slushy.
Washington AP lists diseases linked to smoking including lung cancers such as epidermoid and undifferentiated types. It notes cancers of the oral cavity and leukoplakia prompting cessation, with weaker ties to bladder cancer. Emphysema is described as a progressive swelling of air sacs and small air passages.
An elderly man, Lester C. Whetzel 67, died in a fire that destroyed his frame house five miles west of Winchester near Rt. 50. His wife Ethel M. Whetzel 41 reported he returned inside to retrieve his wallet as flames spread from heating oil in a kitchen stove. Firefighters from Gore and Round Hill battled the blaze around 2:15 p.m. but could not save the home. The couple’s papers and belongings were consumed. funeral services are scheduled for Monday at 2 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home with interment at Mount Olive Cemetery.
The Soviet Union agreed to purchase one million metric tons of wheat from the United States. The deal, announced earlier by Continental Grain Corp of Kansas City, is described as the first in a planned series of American grain deals with the USSR. Tass identified Leonid Matveyev of Exportkhleb and Roy Folk of Continental as the signers.
John Coles, 57, applied Thursday for exemption from jury duty in Leicester. He argued his blindness and near deafness made service impossible, but the town clerk refused the plea. Coles then contacted his member of Parliament for help.

Bowley's Cities Service at Gerrard and Cameron faced a night attack by two sailors after 10 pm. Bowley was struck three times and the cash register was emptied of about $115 as the robbers fled on foot after asking for a road map. Police noted the same duo may have returned to threaten Bowley again.
