City Christmas tree collection disrupted by weather
The city halted the special Christmas tree collection last week because of cancellations of the greens burn and bad weather. People who did not have trees picked up will have them collected this week per the city manager's office.

Public hearings are scheduled on three ordinances including charter bond provisions, a $25 filing fee for zoning change petitions, and a $15 fee for zoning appeals, with third reading on an ordinance aligning the City Code with the land subdivision ordinance effective January 1.

Fire of undetermined origin gutted the 59 year old two story brick McGaheysville Elementary School after midnight as frozen hydrants hindered firefighting. Firefighters focused on saving a nearby frame church about 300 feet away while temperatures hovered near zero.

Two Children Die Sledding in Fairfax County
In Fairfax County two 12 year olds died in separate sledding accidents. Gregory Carpenter of Alexandria was killed when his saucer slid into a car on Ft. Hunt Road after leaving Belle View Elementary School. Alma Rapp died when her sled hit an iron post near Ft. Belvoir where her father Sgt. Melvin Rapp is stationed.
