Crowds Flock To Buy Penny Stamps At Winchester Post Office
The Winchester Post Office sold over 50 000 one cent stamps as a new rate took effect raising first class letters from four to five cents and air mail from seven to eight. Postmaster Wilbur R. Johnston said crowds jammed two windows and a third was opened for most of the day. Many people still used four cent stamps, and letters with the wrong postage were collected as postage due.
