Old Age Help Sales Tax Talk Sparked in Virginia Assembly
In Richmond Virginia January 8 two women groups pressed old age assistance and sales tax ideas as lawmakers opened the General Assembly Former State Senator C O Conan Godlrick urged an old age aid law and a $7200 minimum teachers salary could cost 2500000 while a sales tax would raise 4000000 Stauffer warned tax types vary and an emergency measure tax might shift costs to consumers Godlrick said merchants oppose the tax yet it would pull funds from many who do not contribute to state local taxes He also criticized ABC profits sharing and noted bootlegging activity remains strongest in Virginia's southwest counties
