Rain dampens a simple burial procession as Calvin Coolidge’s body is moved from Northampton to Plymouth Vermont. President Hoover and the nation’s leaders attend a restrained service with prayers and scripture readings.

The 109th annual sessions of the Virginia State Baptist General Association were to meet February 15 to 17 at University Baptist Church Charlottesville, with Rev. Harry J. Goodwin to preach and Dr. E Pendleton Jones to serve as alternate. Officers include President Sparks W. Melton and Secretary E J Jackson. The association lists 1153 churches 761 ordained ministers 234148 members 1120 Sunday schools with 199882 pupils plus church properties valued at 19656803 including pastors' homes valued at 1896061.
Winchester Sanitary Department announces that all restaurant and hotel workers who serve or prepare food must obtain monthly health certificates from a physician. Employers must ensure compliance and will be held liable for violations. Public health officials prohibit contagious workers from serving the public.
Mrs L H McKinster announces she will continue operating the George Washington Gift Shop with the same high grade stock. She requests continued patronage from all who have visited the shop in the past.
Lee Lamp was unanimously reelected president of the Charley Rouss Fire Company of Winchester at the annual officers election in Rouss Hall. Other incumbents were reelected. Herman Hable resigns as treasurer and Joseph Hodgson named treasurer. Membership stands at 698 with over 150 attendees.
Mr and Mrs Lee Hunt of Reliance Virginia donate 20 baskets to the District Nurse Association for Christmas relief. The act follows 76 prior baskets sent to needy families with generous contents including candy nuts and fruit. A nearby scene shows a child remarking on a baby horse tied to its mother.
The union week of prayer will be held in this city January 9-15 with services nightly at 7 30. Testimonials from city church representatives emphasize renewing faith and spiritual life as a remedy for distress and moral challenges facing the community and nation.
Mrs Anne Virginia Gibson Guard 86 dies after two week illness of bronchial pneumonia at her Stephens City home. She was a lifelong resident, widow of John Barton Guard, sister-in-law to Alberta Guard Shannon, and mother of Miss Ida Guard. Funeral at Methodist Episcopal Church South on Sunday at 2 30 p m with burial in Green Hill Cemetery. Also notes large shipment of surplus US auto engines to China for river sampans.
Prof W H McKilwee reelected director of the Winchester Concert Band for another year. Barr Samsell elected president William Stultz vice president Ola Grim secretary and W H McTyee director. The band plans a Sunday concert soon and remains active in civic projects.
Election of officers scheduled for next Monday night January 9 at the South End Hose Company meeting. The event is described as the most important meeting of the year with all members urged to attend. Refreshments and smokes to follow.
At the January meeting in Winchester North Loudoun street Richard B Brown was reelected captain of the Sarah Zane Fire Company for another term. With 67 members present the group also chose officers including L M Crabill George Sumption Tinwood Patton James M Moling W Lee Fisher and others. The meeting honored fallen members and noted 287 current members and a social buffet to close.
Miss Sarah Elizabeth Whisson of Winchester dies at 101 South Braddock street after a sudden stroke that left her unconscious shortly after 4 AM. Born December 24 1852 she lived in the same house most of her life except Civil War years. Survived by a brother and two sisters, funeral Tuesday at 2 PM with burial in Mount Hebron.
Four year old Clara Miller daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Miller of Front Royal Warren county died late yesterday at Winchester Memorial Hospital after a month long illness and operation. She was a cheerful favorite among playmates and elders. Remains were taken to Front Royal for funeral arrangements not yet announced.
