House Judiciary Committee members in Roosevelt era Washington propose Hatton W. Sumners as the successor to retiring Associate Justice George Sutherland. The letter praises Sumners's ability, temper, erudition, and liberal philosophy, urging the President to consider him for the Supreme Court vacancy. Roosevelt also felicitates Justice Sutherland on his long public service and invites him to a White House dinner on January 20.
GM President William S. Knudsen told a Senate unemployment committee the company faced the severest November December sales drop in its history and had to cut 30 000 workers on January 1. He cited rising costs and a 40 million hour loss from strikes, noting improved efficiency after new models were announced.
San Diego Calif Jan 6 Capt Alva D Bernard chief of staff of the navy aircraft scouting force announced a bombing plane with seven men aboard has been missing since yesterday. The plane was on a routine flight when contact was lost at 5 p m. Bernhard said the location and destination were not disclosed but that the plane could land on sea and would be found as ships and planes searched all night and continued today.
Seattle port halted operations after a deadlock between shipowners and International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union over cargo handling. Ships diverted to Puget Sound ports as employers and union representatives failed to reach a second conference.
The Works Progress Administration in Virginia increases the state quota for WPA project employment in Winchester. City officials may add workers to the storm sewer project if Welfare referrals and sponsor funding are in place. Relief needs rise as apple season ends, with 12 applications approved last week. The city will still cover unemployables via the Central Relief Association.

Washington January 6 A House tax sub committee outlined a plan to modify the undistributed profits levy retaining current rates for 500 to 1 000 closely held corporations used to avoid high individual income taxes These firms would see a small tax cut but an almost unchanged effective rate versus the combined corporate tax and undistributed profits tax About 200 000 corporations have taxable incomes and about 199 000 would gain from the remodeling of the undistributed profits tax section
Circulating petitions push council to consider a plan to widen the narrow West Boscawen Street between Loudoun and Indian Alley following yesterday's fire that destroyed the Bell building housing Betsy Ross Restaurant. Officials weigh calling a meeting as citizens urge ground acquisition, echoing a past failed 20 year attempt. The city recently bought land for East Boscawen widening up to Kent and Cameron, completed last year.
Fifty Chinese non combatants were killed or wounded when thirty Japanese bombing planes heavily bombed Hankow and Wuchang across the Yangtze. The raid followed a Chinese bombing strike on Wuhu, one of two Japanese raids this week on the provisional Chinese capital. The radio station at Hankow was targeted but not hit. Several women and children were killed or wounded in the vicinity.
The House appropriations committee proposes 1.414 trillion for the upcoming year cutting 3.732 million from the budget bureau estimates with most savings borne by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
