The former Staunton, Man officer stands accused of shooting soldiers. Testimony reveals Opie’s emotional reaction in court as proceedings begin. Officials from the defense and prosecution outline the case and potential penalties.
Ex service major Jerome L Opie of Staunton, a decorated WWI commander, defended himself before a Senate committee against charges he killed own men. Rep John Philip Hill corroborated Opie’s valor, while witnesses challenged accusers’ evidence. Opie cited a Verdun October 1918 incident as possibly misread as a shooting.
Delegate elect Boyd R. Richards of Frederick County and Winchester plans to travel to Richmond for the upcoming biennial session. San Francisco January 6 A continuance of at least one day in the manslaughter trial of Roscue C Fatty Arbuckle will be necessary as another trial progresses. Gavin McNab defense counsel said he would be ready Tuesday and they will oppose any further adjournment.
The Empire Theatre presents daily matinee at 2:30 with fea ture and comedy programs featuring popular city pictures. Two complete shows nightly with reasonable prices that include tax. Children ten or fifteen cents and adults fifteen or twenty five cents.
The Girls' Athletic Association at Winchester held a semi annual officer election at the Elk's Club. Janet Rinker was chosen president succeeding Opal Rotinsop with Lala Rush as vice president Margaret Estone secretary and Ida Fisher treasurer. A council including Gertrude Schneider M Katharine Aulick Opal Robinson and Lacy White was named. The Glee Club, directed by Mrs. Buckley and Mrs. Griffith, and headed by Lucy White as manager, plans weekly rehearsals with a concert soon.
The Shenandoah Valley National Bank promotes a Xmas Savings Club for 1922 with four classes from 2 1/2 to 5 dollars. The $5 class pays 250 dollars after 50 weeks plus interest two weeks before Christmas. Many prominent businessmen already joined. more members are joining daily. 8% in savings, 4% on certificates of deposit. Total resources over 1? WM, G. Hardy, cashier.
Optometrist WM KLINE of Waynesboro Va advertises eye examinations without drugs at Hotel Evans in Winchester on Friday January 13. The notice lists the date and location for the service.

Alexander Lee Coble a World War I veteran and Winchester Virginia businessman was granted an absolute divorce from Mary Byrd Coble in Circuit Court No. 2 Baltimore on abandonment. Coble testified of army service in the One Hundred and Sixteenth Infantry and that the last time he saw his wife was in April 1918 amid a dispute over money and lifestyle.
About 1,000 persons joined the Christmas Savings Club in recent weeks, many from the prior year’s group. The bank advertises weekly deposits of 10c to $2.60 with small deposits welcomed, urging joiners before the club closes.
