Senator Edmund S. Muskie announced his White House bid promising a “new beginning” for Americans. A top Republican charged him with badmouthing the United States as the campaign starts to unfold.
Frederick County School Board reelected Charles E. Bass as chairman, Kenneth K. Eyre as vice chairman, and Elizabeth Sheetz as clerk. The board approved lunch price hikes effective Jan 10 and retroactive pay raises, keeping meetings at 9 a.m. on the first Tuesday and 7:30 p.m. on the third Monday.
A Virginia Senate caucus voted 21-12 to remove most of Lt. Gov. Henry Howell Jr.'s prerogatives and assign the majority leader post to Sen. William B. Hopkins. The decision follows a 16-13 vote designating Hopkins as majority leader amid a party power shift with Willey holding the pro tempore role. Hopkins, a longtime fiscal critic of Gov. Linwood Holton, said future disputes with the governor would focus on policy rather than personal clashes.
The Star staff earned six awards in the Virginia Press Association annual contest. Doug O Connell and Mary Helen Massie share two first place prizes for In Depth Reporting and a joint two page spread The Life of a Valley Farmer George Richmond. Audrey Coleman won a first for News Writing. Pat Robinson a runner up for Sports Writing. Jack F Davis received an honorable mention for his Personally column. Awards will be handed out Saturday at the John Marshall Hotel in Richmond.
Juliane Koepcke, 17, survived a Christmas Eve crash of a Lineas Aereas Nacionales Electra in the Peruvian jungle. She trekked for days, built a raft, and was found semiconscious by woodcutters near Tourniavista before being flown to a mission center and reunited with her father. Her mother is missing.
A U S Air Force F105 conducted the first American air attack in North Vietnam since last Thursday as MIGs were spotted near the Vietnam Laos border over 48 hours. The mission targeted an antiaircraft radar site with a Shrike missile and marked the year’s first protective reaction strike.
Amos Shryock of Greystone Terrace offers a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those who vandalized Orrick Cemetery last week causing about $2,000 in damage. He notes repeat incidents and urges tipsters to contact police.
North Vietnam urged the United States to end the Vietnamization policy and withdraw troops to secure the release of American prisoners. Radio Hanoi linked peace moves to Nixon ending aggression, warning that U.S. deaths would continue as long the war persisted.
