Bass Reelected Chairman of School Board

Frederick County School Board reelected Charles E. Bass as chairman, Kenneth K. Eyre as vice chairman, and Elizabeth Sheetz as clerk. The board approved lunch price hikes effective Jan 10 and retroactive pay raises, keeping meetings at 9 a.m. on the first Tuesday and 7:30 p.m. on the third Monday.

Virginia Democrats Strip Lt. Gov Howell of Power

A Virginia Senate caucus voted 21-12 to remove most of Lt. Gov. Henry Howell Jr.'s prerogatives and assign the majority leader post to Sen. William B. Hopkins. The decision follows a 16-13 vote designating Hopkins as majority leader amid a party power shift with Willey holding the pro tempore role. Hopkins, a longtime fiscal critic of Gov. Linwood Holton, said future disputes with the governor would focus on policy rather than personal clashes.

Star staff nets six VPA awards for 1971 stories and photos

The Star staff earned six awards in the Virginia Press Association annual contest. Doug O Connell and Mary Helen Massie share two first place prizes for In Depth Reporting and a joint two page spread The Life of a Valley Farmer George Richmond. Audrey Coleman won a first for News Writing. Pat Robinson a runner up for Sports Writing. Jack F Davis received an honorable mention for his Personally column. Awards will be handed out Saturday at the John Marshall Hotel in Richmond.

Girl 17 Survives Jungle Plane Crash in Peru

Juliane Koepcke, 17, survived a Christmas Eve crash of a Lineas Aereas Nacionales Electra in the Peruvian jungle.
