Earthquakes rattled coastal communities shocking residents as tremors disrupted daily life. Officials urged calm while emergency services assessed damage and coordinated response actions.
Earthquakes rocked the Imperial Valley on New Year dawn causing major damage in Calexico and Mexicali. Buildings collapsed and windows shattered while residents fled toward Yuma as rail and street landmarks suffered, with widespread losses estimated over a thousand dollars.
Braddock Street Methodist Episcopal Church announces a church sponsored revival with Dr Luther Bridges and song leader Homer Jenkins. Services start Sunday January 9 at Braddock Street Church with dedication at the tabernacle, nightly revival from 7 30 followed by noon and afternoon meetings.
The Empire Theatre debuts Michael Strogoff as a three star opening engagement with daily matinees and two evening shows. Frederick county officers led by Sheriff Pannett with Game Warden F W Pingley and Deputy Sheriff A J Wigginton aided by three federal prohibition agents searched the northern area for liquor stills and moonshine. Three men were arrested, about 15 tons of moonshine liquor and 30 gallons of other liquor were seized, with several contraband items found at Dehaven and a still and mash seized near Clarke and Hensell. Bail set at 500 dollars for Clarke and Hensell. Dehaven cited for illegal possession. remaining search yielded no incriminating evidence.
Clarence Triplett known as Dutch, a waiter in Winchester hotels, died of pneumonia in Pittsburgh at about 40. He leaves a son, father William Triplett, and brother John Triplett, all of Winchester. Body to be shipped by Pennsylvania Railroad to Winchester for funeral Wednesday at 3 PM at the Baptist Church. Visitors Mrs A D Snodgrass of Philadelphia and Mr and Mrs S F Linkey of Beachwood, N J, will stay with Mr and Mrs Homer Guyer over weekend.
Alfred E. Smith was sworn in as New York governor for the fourth time in a formal assembly chamber ceremony. The event featured hunting floral displays, military and naval guards, and brief remarks by Smith after taking the oath administered by Florence Knapp. Bishop Gibbons gave the invocation and Bishop Nelson delivered the benediction as artillery salutes and band music accompanied the festivities.
Fire committee of the common council served notice on the Bridges tabernacle building committee that asphalt exterior paper used to fire proof the East Amherst structure must be removed and replaced with asbestos or metal. The inflammable tar naptha paper failed a test and could aid flames, so owners will comply to meet the fire zone requirements.

The Right Reverend Dennis J. O'Connell former bishop of Richmond and head of the Virginia diocese died at noon in Richmond. He had served as pastor of the Church of the Sacred Heart in Winchester about 40 years ago and resigned due to ill health last year. Bishop Brennan succeeded him. Mrs. John C. Cather hosted a Tuesday Bridge Club gathering with five tables, featuring guest Granville Shirley of Cumberland, Md.
Berkeley County fruit growers meet in Martinsburg to discuss unifying four state apple marketing efforts.
