President Eisenhower disclosed he is available for a second term drawing immediate GOP praise. Democratic leaders criticized the move claiming political pressures but echoed a calm campaign path. Veterans like Truman and Hoover offered cautious optimism while Kefauver and Stevenson framed the decision as a policy and record issue for the race ahead.
President Eisenhower announced he will seek another four years and will explain his decision tonight at 10 p.m. EST on nationwide TV and radio. He praised Vice President Nixon but did not state if Nixon will be his running mate. The announcement follows his Sept. 24 heart attack and sets up a San Francisco convention nomination.
A holiday spirit swept the New York stock market as prices surged on news President Eisenhower would run for reelection. Big gains appeared early with Du Pont, U S Steel, Bethlehem Steel, Kennecott Copper, and General Motors rising. The Associated Press 60 stock average climbed, volume neared five million by noon, and trading accelerated as buy orders flooded the floor.

John Boatwright of Buckingham offered it as one of two measures targeting Arlington after its school board announced a trial in limited integration, which was later abandoned. The Moncure bill to remove Arlington’s self election of a school board was also before the Senate.
President Eisenhower announced plans to seek re-election and drew a no comment from Senator Byrd of Virginia while Representative Tuck of Virginia said it is not a complete surprise. Both former Virginia governors did not back Eisenhower or Stevenson in the last race. Virginia favored Eisenhower in 1952.
The Moore school segregation measure cleared the House 62 to 34 but faces a threatened setback in the Senate Rules Committee. Lt. Gov. A E S Stephens and Sen. Edward L. Breeden oppose it. a 3 to 2 vote could stall it. A floor move or an amended version seeking a pre term special session to enact Gray Commission plans may still advance the measure.
Secretary Dulles told a Senate subcommittee there is reason to believe the Soviet Union would welcome relief from armament. He noted U.S. disarmament aims and supported aerial inspection and exchange of blueprints to deter surprise attacks. He also said hidden nuclear stockpiles cannot be detected easily and that large attacks require broad inspection.
Italian President Giovanni Gronchi urged Congress that Western nations should deepen cooperation beyond military ties, spanning political social and economic fields. He warned of disquieting global trends despite NATO efforts and noted communism’s expansionary appeal to improve the lot of the underprivileged.
Senator Harry F. Byrd Jr of Winchester single handedly defeated a bill on the Senate floor by a 2 to 17 vote after a two hour debate. The measure would have enshrined Senate rules as statutory law and was the first bill of the session to be killed on the floor despite committee approval. Byrd argued against precedent that would deny the Senate its right to govern its own procedures.
Sixteen railroads filed a countersuit in U S District Court accusing trucking firms of conspiracy and restraint of trade seeking 120 million dollars in damages under the Sherman Act. The action follows a similar suit by 17 truckers and the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Assn seeking 250 million in treble damages.
In Marianna Arkansas seven Negro children died when a four room frame house burned. Pregnant mother Vi ola Edwards suffered critical burns while the father Lonnie Edwards and two other children escaped. The dead are Willie 13 Patricia Ann 8 Lula Jean 6 Garland 4 twins Joseph and Josephine 2 and Jerome 1. Mrs Edwards was taken to a Little Rock hospital with severe burns. The fire occurred seven miles south of Marianna. Lonnie Edwards and two children escaped. Cause unknown.
A 3:05 a.m. blaze at the Russell Potts apartment house on Highland Avenue left two dead and a third in serious condition at Memorial Hospital. Nine others were treated and released. cause traced to an overturned oil lamp with lamps and candles in use. Building damage estimated at 1500 dollars. power company records show nine meters cut off.
