Taiwan newspapers attack the Nixon Chou communique while Tokyo calls it a setback for Eisaku Sato. Taipei stock market dives as residents fear Beijing gains control. Soviet press signals displeasure via reprinting a U.S. Communist party critique.
Israeli troops and tanks fought Palestinian guerrillas in southeast Lebanon for a fourth day then began pulling back from forward positions. U N Security Council urged withdrawal. Guerrillas remained active around Rashayya while planes provided air cover. Israel vowed to defend itself despite the resolution.
Debra Sue Covert, 20, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph R. Covert of Mt. Pleasant Pennsylvania, won Miss Winchester Tri County 1972 at Shenandoah College. First runner up was Cynthia Suzanne Leighton, 19, and second runner up Alice Beryl Wiltshire, 17, as Jerrilyn Denise Seiger won Miss Congeniality. The event, a Shenandoah Conservatory student pageant, served as a Miss Virginia prelim in Roanoke, with Miss Virginia pageant winner moving on to Atlantic City for Miss America.
Eugene C. Babb former Winchester City Councilman says he will seek the Republican nomination for the South Ward City Council seat. A mass meeting is set for 7 30 p m Thursday at the Holiday Inn East. The May 2 election will fill one of three South Ward seats including Reuss Friendship and Shawnee precincts. Babb is the second GOP candidate. incumbent William M. Mote seeks re election in the North Ward. Babb formerly served North Ward from 1958 to 1961 before moving to South Ward.
Nixon returns to Anchorage after a week in China where the talks produced a broad communique on Taiwan Indochina and trade. The United States reaffirmed its goal to withdraw all forces from Taiwan and reduce presence as tensions ease while keeping dialogue with Beijing.
National guard troops and hundreds of volunteers searched dawn for about 400 missing after flooding left 61 dead and wiped out Appalachian coal camps along Buffalo Creek hollow. Gov Moore sought 1 million dollars for relief as 4,000 of 7,000 residents were left homeless. Logan County was named a national disaster area.
Water will be shut off in Whittier Acres, Fox Drive area, west of Fox Drive, and Rt. 50 this afternoon for five to six hours to repair a water main break. Repairs start at 1:30 p.m. Water and Sewer Supt. S. H. Reaves reported the break occurred this morning.
South Vietnamese forces mounted a third operation into Cambodia west of Mnong plateau about 130 miles northeast of Saigon. The command reported 136 enemy killed and 20 Vietnamese dead with 37 wounded in nine engagements. US air support aided the offensives as Rangers reported light contact and six enemy killed 15 to 20 miles east of Takeo.
Senator William A. Truban moved to enforce child support by cohabiting fathers, reviving his welfare bill after last week’s committee kill. A welfare department advocate said the measure would ensure responsible upkeep while protecting dependent children from possible welfare loss.
