A rare mid winter hailstorm struck south of the city yesterday afternoon around 3 20 p m. H F Byrd Jr editor of The Star witnessed the hail between Rockingham County and New Market as heavy rain accompanied the event. Dr Walter S Hough of the Winchester Fruit Research Laboratory noted it happens occasionally in mid winter but considered it unusual and attributed it to a cold front dropping temperatures about 30 degrees from afternoon to night.
