Probers review telegrams amid claims that Underwood influenced him. New names surface as investigators press forward, drawing in more individuals connected to the matter.
The Senate oil committee prepared to summon Attorney General A Mitchell Palmer to testify as it reviews telegrams exchanged with Washington Post publisher Edward B McLean during his Palm Beach stay. The messages reference Underwood Curtis Willis Zev and others linked to the oil probe amid bids to interest McLean associates. Senator Dill urged calling Palmer as go between in delivering McLean's messages.
Reverend Charles Francis Potter proposes an American Bible built from modern writings and figures. He argues Lincoln equals Jesus in appeal and would place Washington Adams and Jefferson in an American pentateuch. Jane Addams would lead social reform, and Woodrow Wilson is titled modern Prince of Peace.
The Friendship bazar organizers announce a weekly Friday square dance starting February 29 in the hall. Good music and fun are promised with proceeds benefiting the Friendship Fire company. All learn square dancing after two weeks training and are urged to bring a lady friend.
Stafford Pemberton and his dancers bring their orchestra to the Empire Theatre for a 8 30 curtain tomorrow night with a program including The Dance of Adam and Eve and The Slave Market. Prices range 50c to 1 50 plus tax and the show has drawn praise from White House and cinema critics. The feature tonight is The Fools Awakening starring Harrison Ford and Enid Bennett.
Clothing donated during winter will be sold at Red Cross headquarters at 10 o clock Saturday morning. Proceeds go to the production committee for school garments and sick room supplies for needy families.
A Fruit Growers meeting will be held Saturday March 1 at 2 30 p m in Handley Library. Guest speaker G S Ralston Extension Horticulturist from Blacksburg Va station will discuss spraying schedules plus cultivation fertilization and spray applications and will answer questions. Fred of the Co. Fruit Growers Assn notes the event.

Henry Dixon a colored herb vendor and familiar figure in Winchester, died last night at the county almshouse after weeks of illness. He will be buried there tomorrow. Dixon gained local note for gathering medicinal herbs and minnows for bait, living a life without a steady home and leaving no known relatives.
Misses Eva Burrows Westfield New Jersey Natalie Arnut Front Royal Virginia Eunice Orndorff Gore Virginia and Dorothy Cisgel Colesville Maryland members of the class of 1922 were welcome visitors over the last weekend at Fort Loudoun Seminary.
Mrs. Melvin Starr has returned to her home in Washington after visiting her parents on South Braddock street because of her mother Mrs. Charles McDonald being seriously ill with grippe. Mrs. McDonald has recovered enough to be up in the house.
Miss Mary Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. O. Miller, returned last evening from Rockledge Florida where she had been the guest of Mr and Mrs. George Barrie for six weeks. She spent several days with Washington friends before returning home.
Mrs Powell Fauntleroy wife of Colonel Fauntleroy United States Army arrived from Charleston South Carolina and visited Mr and Mrs Stewart Bell on North Market Street. Formerly Miss Mary K Bomall of York Pennsylvania she left last evening for Washington.

The Frederick County Circuit Court held a night session to finish the mandamus proceedings by Standard Gas and Oil Supply Co seeking a building permit for a gasoline station at Piccadilly and Braddock streets in Winchester. City officials testified as arguments centered on a 300 foot setback rule and alleged arbitrary action after the company bought the property. The judge reserved decision after closing briefs from both sides.
The Virginia General Assembly adopted a joint resolution endorsing U S Senator Carter Glass for the Democratic presidential nomination. The Fletcher bill would shift inheritance tax enforcement to the state auditor, boosting annual state revenue by about 300000 if approved. The Mills bill to teach the federal constitution passed in the Senate. the Parsons measure for free elementary textbooks was sent to the Senate finance committee.
Attorney General Harry M. Daugherty arrived in Chicago in connection with the federal grand jury investigation of the veterans bureau. He planned to confer with Department of Justice prosecutors before visiting witnesses, then hoped to hurry the case so he could travel to Miami to join his ailing wife.
Mrs Bertie Puffenburger wife of Oliver Puffenburger died yesterday at her home near Whitacre aged 45 after an illness likely pneumonia. She was daughter of the late S L Clark and leaves a large number of children and other relatives. Funeral services will be held tomorrow with interment near Wesley Chapel in West Virginia.

Lucinda Lavender, a comely colored girl with prior police court appearances, was arrested for robbing a stranger of 80 dollars on South Braddock Street. She pled guilty before Justice Worsley and is jailed awaiting grand jury action after a pocketbook and money were recovered.

M Finkelstein a well known Winchester tailor departed for Baltimore and Philadelphia to select woolens and other cloth for his West Water street establishment, spending several days sourcing new spring merchandise.
Mrs H P Woltz returns home to East Piccadilly Street from Catawba Sanitorium where she had months of treatment accompanied by her husband Mr Woltz who had stayed in Roanoke. Her condition improved greatly and doctors expect eventual cure with continued at home care.
The Rev. Father Edward Gallagher, a former assistant pastor of the Church of the Sacred Heart, arrived from Hagerstown Maryland to visit friends. He is staying at the church rectory on South Main Street and helps with parish work alongside Father T A Rankin. He relinquished duties due to health, spent time in a state sanatorium, and has recently improved, receiving a warm welcome from locals.

In the Commonwealth court jurors acquitted Joe Dai Ransom after a brief trial lasting about feee hours. Lipkins was killed when Ransom, defending himself after Lipkins allegedly grabbed a shotgun and dragged a woman from a house. Prosecutor sought murder but accepted a verdict of acquittal after witnesses testified and closing statements were made.
The Colonial Theatre presents Maytime starring Harrison Ford and Ethel in a five act drama with a mix of past and present narrative. The film features a dramatic lover scene and a hopeful ending, with Olga Printzlau and Gasnier credited for production.
