Body found along Shenandoah River with gunshot wounds
Robert Lynn Garrett, 28, of Stephens City, was found dead face down beside a white late model Corvette on Route 622 near the Shenandoah River bridge. Clarke County Medical Examiner Dr. B N Chambers said Garrett died instantly from two rifle bullets to the back and that the killing occurred at least 12 hours before discovery. Police and investigators pursued leads while noting Garrett’s prior arrest in a tractor theft case and the absence of consensus on where the homicide occurred.

Economic impact feared from James River shutdown
The State Energy Office began a thorough assessment of the economic impact after the Benjamin Harrison Bridge on the James River was damaged by a tanker. A month or more of river closure could devastate central Virginia's economy as fuel oil and other cargoes cannot move to and from Hampton Roads, Hopewell, and Richmond. Local industries rely on river shipping, with 1.5 million gallons of industrial fuel oil moved daily by barge. Some expect fuel must shift to truck delivery, increasing costs. Hopewell and Charles City County officials warn of broad economic harm and job travel impacts.
