Laos Laotian War Toll Rises with 101 U S Deaths

U S Command reports 59 Americans killed in action and 42 nonhostile deaths in the week ending Feb 13, the highest weekly American toll in five months. South Vietnamese losses totaled 432 KIA and 1 446 wounded. Air strikes and helicopter support dominate the Laos and Laos border operations as fighting continues around Hill 31 and Lao Bao.

Nixon links Hanoi to broad Indochina war in wartime report

Washington AP President Nixon charged Hanoi with broadening the war into an Indochina conflict and warned of hard choices in Vietnam Cambodia and Laos as U S and allies withdraw. He said there will be continued aid and air support to allied ground forces while pursuing negotiations for peace.

More Troops May Be Sent Into Laos

Washington dispatch reports that additional thousands of South Vietnamese troops may be sent into Laos in coming weeks to back the drive on enemy supply routes. Pentagon officials note 22,000 troops shifted before the Feb 8 Laotian offensive, with 10,200 used so far and the rest held in reserve in South Vietnam. Lt Gen Vogt says North Vietnam has six new regiments in the Laotian panhandle, joining about 15,000 troops already there, signaling intent to fight.

Thieu Says North Vietnam March Is Only a Matter of Time

President Nguyen Van Thieu stated at Pleiku that a march by North Vietnam is only a matter of time. Viet Nam Press reported the remark without elaboration, while Saigon Post quoted it as time factor dependent. A government spokesman said the line was not in the prepared text and offered no further comment.

Congressman May Change Residence in Redistricting Plan

Senate panel keeps congressional reapportionment intact

In Richmond the Senate Privileges and Elections Committee gave final approval to the congressional reapportionment bill with no changes beyond minor formatting. Miners Trapped By Coal Slide In Virginia Mine

Three miners were trapped by a 50-foot slate roof collapse at Island Creek Coal Co. No. 2 mine in Buchanan County Virginia Pocahontas area near 3 a.m. Rescue teams drilled air holes and could talk to the men who were unhurt. The mine will remain closed for safety checks and inspection review.

Clarke Pupils Hardest Hit By Flu Bug

Clarke County schools report higher absence rates from flu like illnesses with Clarke County High School showing 16 percent absent Tuesday and 13 percent today. Cooley Elementary about 14 percent absent over three days while Clarke County Intermediate drops from 12 to nine percent. Primary School absences rise from eight to 11.8 percent. Winchester and Frederick County schools run about normal.

Laos Operation Said Critical To Withdrawal

Gen. Creighton Abrams says the Laos border operation is critical to the U S troop withdrawal in Vietnam. The effort aims to destroy North Vietnamese stockpiles and hinder a 1971 offensive, with results not clear until after the rainy season ends.
