U S Marines on Iwo Island push toward the turning point as Mt Suribachi is captured and fighting centers around pillboxes and caves. Admiral Nimitz reports steady progress amid heavy resistance, with supplies flowing and casualties mounting in the six day assault.
In no-man's land near Coerlitz southeast of Berlin Soviet and Polish forces pressed a large scale battle as they cleared supply routes toward Berlin. German reports claim Russians advanced to Breslau front while clearing Poznan and Arn swalde, with renewed fighting in East Prussia and near Königsberg.
U S forces on the Nin and First Armies pushed along the Cologne plain with bridgeheads along a 22 mile front and advances beyond the Roer. American units seized Niederzeit and Dueren east of the Roer while expanding on the Linich Juelich Dueren corridor. German defenses stiffened yet aerial sealoff and counterattacks failed to halt the drive toward Cologne.
Manila report details three regiments of the 37th Infantry fighting through Intramuros to end Japanese presence in the city amid civilian casualties and reports of mass killings. General MacArthur adds American forces seized Biri island to control San Bernardino straits.

In Manila on February 24, Brig. Gen. Leo M. Kreber commanded the 37th Division artillery secreted into the downtown area. Dawn attack opened with a 7 A M salvo across the Pasig. The heavy shelling targeted the inner line as infantry moved through the breach.
News reached Clarksville that Lt Col Frank E. Adkins was killed in a U S Army Air Corps training crash near Galveston Texas. He had been stationed at Kissimmee Florida and was married to Charlotte Nicodemus. He was a veteran of European and Pacific theaters. Funeral arrangements were not finalized.
Richmond Virginia February 24 The Virginia ABC Board announced whiskey ration for Virginians will stay the same in March as February. One fifth of domestic whiskey or gin plus the same amount of imported and bottled in bond goods based on container size. All brandies domestic and imported including grape products removed from ration list though purchasable ration free in March up to a fifth per day with proper presentation.

Fifth Army Infantry completed the capture of Mount Terraccia two miles north of Belvedere amid Nazi counterattacks. Partisans took Rocca Corneta village southwest of Belvedere while air support aided ground operations. Front east of Bologna remained quiet.
Mrs. Margaret Hayes received a War Department telegram stating her husband Pvt Woodrow Henry Hayes was wounded in action in Germany and is now in a hospital. He last wrote Feb 3 from Germany. he entered service July last year from Roanoke and worked for American Viscose at Front Royal. He is 26.
In Charleston West Virginia on February 24 a blast destroyed a small frame home near Clendenin killing Ella Lawhorn 55 the widowed mother of three soldiers and seriously injuring her daughters Marie 13 and Rebecca 15. The home burned after the explosion and state troopers sought the cause while Marie and Rebecca were treated at a Charleston hospital. Ella Lawhorn also survived by four sons including three in the Army.
