Washington AP reports a suspected 1 percent rise in January consumer prices from December, led by beef which climbed at least 5 percent amid winter shortages. CPI wholesale prices rose 1.3 percent. analysts caution the annual rate may not hit 12 percent.
Energy Secretary James R. Schlesinger warned Congress the Iran crisis could trigger a noticeable but not crippling gasoline shortage this summer. He said prices may rise three to four cents a gallon by mid-summer and noted potential mandatory steps to ensure heating oil for next winter.

A fulltime county or city attorney requirement for highway condemnations was approved. The Senate adjusted bingo law policies and the Health Department gained oversight of transporting hazardous radioactive materials.
Treasury Secretary W Michael Blumenthal begins a nine day trip to China carrying President Carter's instructions on the China Vietnam border war. He will meet Hua Kuo feng and Teng Hsiao ping and attend the opening of the U S Embassy in Peking. The talks aim to advance economic and trade issues and seek settlement of 196 million in U S claims, including 53.8 million from Boise Cascade.
