World Prayer Day observance at Winchester churches
Local women from 11 Winchester churches will participate in the World Day of Prayer service at 7 30 p m Friday in the Presbyterian Church under the Winchester Council of Church Women. Miss S Bertha Williams will speak on her World Council of Churches meeting. Clergy guests include Revs Whitten Garland Hiser Artz and Dr Jackson. The 86th annual World Day of Prayer theme is Abide in Me from John 15 4. About 20 000 U S communities and 125 countries join the observance with offerings supporting foreign and home missions.

The Winchester Police Department headlined the seventh annual banquet at the George Washington Hotel with 135 attendees including state officials. State Sen Mills Godwin praised law and order and ten officers received certificates for completing the 1955 Police School. special awards went to Fahnestock for a perfect score and Shumaker and Hoover for high marks.

Building boom rolls on with 1954 surge in January permits
In January 27 building permits were issued in the area with 19 for new dwellings. Valuation reached 197000, up from 119400 in January 1954. Frederick County issued 16 permits worth 139700 while Winchester had 11 permits totaling 57300. The largest job was a 20000 warehouse and office in Merriman's Lane north of Winchester.

Overheated Stove Triggers Fire Call at Keffer's Grocery
