Washington reports the Office of Price Administration has placed ceilings on five fresh vegetables and outlines forthcoming rules for eggs and other staples. The measure aims to curb speculative price rises amid rationing and shifts from canned to fresh produce as housewives adjust buying habits.
W M Krise announces a meeting of Winchester and Frederick county merchants at Sarah Zane Hall to discuss war savings. The Richmond staff's Mr Scar will present a plan to offer stamps and bonds for sale. Ralph Pifer chairs the retail merchants war savings group.

Nathan Williamson resigned as pastor of the Cork Street Church of Christ after a Sunday congregational meeting. He cited refusing to cooperate with a missionary society he says is controlled by modernists, not recognizing a college he views as disloyal, and opposition to commercialism in the church. The resignation was accepted by a 66 to 54 vote.
Master Sergeant Osborne F. Oiler Sr. of Berryville died at Camp Blanding Florida from head injuries after an automobile wreck returning to camp. He had served in the Army many years in the United States and abroad. Funeral services were held at Camp Blanding and the body taken to Texas for burial. He is survived by his wife Ruth Marston and a son Osborne Oiler Jr. His father Henry Oiler and sister Mrs. Fred Lloyd attended the service and accompanied the body to Texas.
An Allied convoy south of Guadalcanal on February 17 fought off a night torpedo attack. Five Japanese torpedo planes were shot down from eight attackers while transports and destroyers escaped unharmed. A censor-approved eye witness account notes the Japanese tactics mirrored earlier attempts that sank the Chicago.
Winchester residents collected about 6 000 pounds of cans for the tin salvage drive led by Ralph Hengeveld. A convoy of used cars from New York to Memphis ran afoul of the law in Winchester for improper registration and missing operators licenses. six cars impounded pending proper licensing.

He said losses of UN merchant ships are down but the menace endures, with Germans building subs faster than destroyed.
Russian troops push from Krasnodar toward Norovossisk advancing through Khalmskaya into Akhtyrskaya about 25 miles from the sea. The communique says Red army presses west of Rostov Voroshilovgrad and in the Donets basin, with many towns captured and heavy German losses reported.
British and American forces check Rommel four miles south of Thala amid heavy German casualties while Mareth line shields center. Stalin vows massive Nazi losses on the 25th anniversary as Red Army presses all fronts. Japanese torpedo planes attack Allied convoy but are repelled. raids hit bases in New Guinea and the Solomons. American bombers attacked Japanese bases in the north and south Pacific on February 22. Liberator heavy bombers and Mitchell bombers with P 38 escorts hit Kiska in the North Pacific. In the South Pacific Vila and Munda on New Georgia were targeted. fires started at Munda. All planes returned safely. Munda has been bombed at least 74 times since November.
Under-Secretary of State Sumner Welles reiterated the U S hope that Finland soon withdraw from the war against Russia. He noted Finland’s friendship with the United States and urged Finland to cease military aid to Germany and its allies.
Judge Walter G. Olmstead of Front Royal Virginia died yesterday in a Washington hospital. He was longtime trial justice for Warren County. Survived by his widow and daughter Mrs Lynn O Delashmutt of this city. Funeral set for Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal on Wednesday.
