In Arlington a joyful scene unfolded as John H. Glenn Jr. launched into space. Friends and neighbors saw the liftoff as his wife and family watched on TV and spoke by phone with the astronaut from the capsule.
Gerald Goodman a Winchester insurance man and Kiwanis Club president who served with Col. Glenn from December 1943 to March 1945 in the Marshall Islands says Glenn has a lot of personal drive and ambition. He calls him very friendly with a big grin and notes Glenn’s calculated risk taking and strict safety discipline.
The Virginia General Assembly praised Astronaut John H. Glenn Jr. for courage and fitness to represent the nation in space. Senate and House approved a resolution by Sen. Charles R. Fenwick of Arlington, Glenn’s home county, as Glenn completed his second Earth orbit.
