The Senate by a two vote margin rejected House amendments to the Richeson Bill reducing license taxes on wholesale merchants. The decision sends the measure to a conference committee. Senator Harry F. Eyre Jr. of Winchester commented on the floor.
The House Privileges and Elections Committee approved the Page resolution to repeal the poll tax after two amendments. Delegate John Warren Cooke of Matthews cast the only dissenting vote while members reserved the right to oppose on the floor. If enacted, the measure would put the poll tax question to voters in Virginia.
The Richeson Bill would cut licenses for wholesalers and retailers to 13 and 18 cents per $100. House and Senate committees push repeal of the poll tax and overhaul absentee voting. The Page poll tax repeal measure would go to a referendum with annual voter registration and a higher capitation tax, without reinstating a voting prerequisite.
Senator Flanders said initial Universal Military Training trainees would likely be chosen by lot rather than local draft boards. He urged random selection for a better cross section as the Senate Armed Services Committee reviews the bill. House debates the proposal next Tuesday amid objections from some members.

The State Corporation Commission flatly rejects pleas by Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co of Virginia for more rate increases. C&P counsel Justin Moore notes possible appeal to the Virginia Supreme Court. The commission will not hear further arguments until after a nine month trial on 10 percent common telephone charges.

Chicago police detectives stopped two suspicious men who then seized the officers guns and forced them into their squad car. The bandits drove the car for about thirty minutes on the west side before binding the detectives and leaving them in a coal yard. They then used the car to rob a saloon owner and 15 customers, taking about $400 before abandoning the squad car nearby.

Lee O. Dick 57 prominent fruit grower and businessman of Clearbrook died this morning at Memorial Hospital from a cerebral hemorrhage. He directed Winchester Cold Storage Farmers and Merchants National Bank Green Chemical Company and Frederick County Cooperative Farm Bureau. Survived by widow Estelle Braithwaita son Robert Lee Dick and daughter Virginia Dick Gooden. Funeral arrangements pending.
