Evangelistic Campaign Bureau reports Sunday mass meeting for men at Quarket Street Church drew a full house. Rev Richardson led devotion and Rev Kelly preached on sowing and reaping urging righteous deeds over unrighteousness to avoid the whirlwind of sin. Continued on page 4.
The Sarah ane Fire Company hosts an essay contest on "Why Every Citizen Should Contribute to the Sarah Zane Trick Fund." Entries from Handley High School students must be mailed by Washington's birthday. Judges will select winners Wednesday after noon and The Star will print announcements Thursday.
Tomorrow and Wednesday the Empire hosts a Washington Birthday program featuring high school exercises at 2:30, a 4:00 matinee, and 5:30 riding. Evening shows include the Goldwyn feature THE REDEEMER and THE INVISIBLE POWER with HOUSE, plus a comedy. May McAvoy stars in A VIRGINIA COURT and Ruth Roland in THE WHITE LEA.
Between 350 and 400 cases of whiskey were stolen today from the Oscar Pepper distillery in Woodford County by 20 masked bandits who held up and tied four guards to posts. The value was estimated at $40,000.
Miss Margaret Hodgson has returned from New York where she attended a spring millinery school.
Dr. Mellyar H. Lichliter appears in the City Hall Auditorium for a 8 30 pm lecture on The Vaudeville Mindy a keen analysis of present day social tendencies and leisure time. The speaker, an effective popular lyceum orator, combines plain talk with courage against sham and hypocrisy. The public is invited to attend.
Northern Virginia bankers group Three of the Virginia Bankers Association will hold its annual meeting in Manassas on Wednesday Washington's Birthday. Shenandoah Valley National Bank and Commercial and Savings Bank attendees will be present along with Farmers and Merchants National Bank. Union Bank not a member. Williams and Sloat to speak.
The Baptist Home Department at Rouss Hall Web. 28 hosts a chicken and waffle supper. Tickets are available at Mrs. Aiken's on B. Water Street. Mrs. Bayliss will bake waffles.
Editor The Star comments on Ira Capper's prohibition writings noting their lack of vigor. The letter challenges the claimed gains under prohibition and accuses Capper of quoting inflated statistics while urging Congress for further funding.
In Richmond last week Senators C. Goolrick of Fredericksburg and W. J. Layman of Craig argued over a bill to give defense attorneys time for reply to Commonwealth counsel. Goolrick denied breaking prohibition law enforcement as Layman charged. Downing of Lancaster joined in condemning Layman as the debate extended beyond an hour.
Indictments against 105 defendants in a Logan and Boone county case are set for April 24 in Charles Town after a venue change. Fifteen counts cover treason murder threats to do bodily harm and related offenses stemming from armed miner marches last August and September. Treason charges are expected to be addressed first.
A special grand jury in Richmond Virginia started an inquiry into the Lexington Hotel fire of February 6 that killed 12 people. The panel has a police report and a list of 30 witnesses who were guests at the hotel during the disaster.

Majorities in the House Ways and Means committe refer back to the special tax subcommittee the financing of a soldier bonus. The subcommittee will meet tomorrow to discuss a sales tax among other options. A White House official said letters and telegrams opposing immediate bonus legislation far outnumber those in favor, with critics citing selfish financial interests of powerful centers.
Washington February 20. Business nationwide shows progress toward a swing in the economic pendulum, and the Federal Reserve Board report to Congress says a revival may be near. Some believe the revival will soon begin and lead to a new era of prosperity.
In Chicago on February 28 Bishop Thomas F. Gailor president of the national council of the Episcopal Church urged modification of the Volstead law and said the eighteenth amendment was a mistake though he supported morality and personal observance of Prohibition.
George Finchman of Berkley County, West Virginia, swung a broad blade ax that nearly decapitated his son who stepped in front of the blade. The boy received a painful but non dangerous injury. Auction of farm stock and goods by D M Leidig at Leidig's farm one mile west of Vaucluse. Sale held February 22 for stock and equipment with items including 18-1p-2t details and terms of sale.
A special grand jury in Corporation Court indicted Henry MokKee for transporting five gallons of liquor on December 23. After a prior flawed return, a new indictment was reviewed today as Judge Whiting urged jurors to report any law violations and witnesses to be summoned if needed.
A frame house in the Italian quarter on Woodbridge Avenue in New Brunswick New Jersey was blown to pieces by a blast believed to be caused by a bomb. Two nearby houses were badly wrecked but no injuries were reported. The sole occupant of the wrecked house was arrested pending investigation.
The Annual Supper of the Progressive Men's Bible Class at Centenary Reformed Church runs February 21 and 22 from 5 to 10 p m. The event supports parish activities and community outreach.
Timbers a colored youth, is held for the Shenandoah county grand jury on charges of stealing a large chocolate pie from the local newspaper office and stealing from Editor William D. Allen. Authorities say the value is about a few dollars and pieces of cake were taken at a sale by the Camp Fire Girls. Allen planned the pie for a bachelor dinner after Sunday school.
The body of Frank Baron, 35, a Piney Forks mine owner and former dry officer, was found near his home in Steubenville on February 19 with four bullet wounds through the mouth. County officials believe he was killed for revenge by parties arrested in recent raids. the finding was reported today.
The House passed a resolution extending until June 30, 1923 the three percent restrictive immigration law and sent it to the Senate for action.
Chicago Feb 20 The conference of over 100 labor and farm leaders heard William H Johnston president of the International Association of Mechanics call for a non partisan political program to retire from public life the servants of plutocracy and privilege and urged the groups to unite in the effort.
The United States Railroad Labor Board ruled that dispatchers receive time and a half for overtime after the ninth hour. The eight hour day remains standard, and the decision applies to about 5,000 train dispatchers nationwide.
President Harding told the Senate that information on the four power treaty negotiations cannot be disclosed as most talks were conducted without a formal record. He said no secret undertakings or exchanges of notes existed. Meanwhile the foreign relations panel endorsed the U S Japan Yap island treaty 10 to 1.
The Rev Dr W D Smith of Richmond arrives tonight to speak tomorrow afternoon at the Empire Theater for Handley High School’s Washington birthday celebration. He will be entertained by L Marshall Baker at Baker’s Washington Street residence during his stay.

Theodore Marburg junior was seriously wounded when a pistol discharged in a store caused a bullet to strike him in the head. He was aided by bystanders and a physician, then transported with his party toward Magdalena near the Mexican border. His condition fluctuated through the night as relatives and physicians advised against a long southward journey.
Funeral services for the late Mary Ellen Clark were held morning at the home of Lemuel A. Clark No 629 Fain Avenue. Interment at Chestnut Grove Cemetery had been postponed due to poor road conditions in the county section.
