A February snowstorm left an 18 inch blanket and sparked a city wide dig out. Emergency plan C activated downtown while 9 percent of secondary roads remained snowbound awaiting plow service tonight.
The Community Historic Preservation group led by Mrs Helen Duprey Bullock of the National Trust will convene at 8 p m in the Handley Library Auditorium. A Post Office incident noted a five year old girl Linda Shetter received a Valentine with two dimes taped to the envelope, marked Belong to letter.
Snow drifts up to six feet slowed road crews clearing secondary routes in Loudoun and Shenandoah valleys after a storm dumped up to 19 inches across northern and western Virginia. Schools closed in many counties including Frederick and Warren as weather flurried lingered in the mountains.
Bobby Baker refused to produce subpoenaed records citing Fifth Amendment protections. Attorney Edward Bennett Williams said the Rules Committee is conducting a legislative trial as Baker defends his constitutional rights after resigning as secretary to the Senate Democratic majority. The panel probes Baker’s finances while on the Senate payroll of 19 600 dollars annually for possible improprieties. A closed session preceded a public hearing outlook of under a month.
Gov. Albertis S. Harrison Jr. dismisses political significance in Lucy Baines Johnson being named festival queen. He says she was chosen on merit for being attractive and personable. He notes her father may become U.S. president and mentions Lucy will be hosted by Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. in Winchester.
A low pressure trough kept skies cloudy over Virginia today and caused snow flurries across parts of the state as cold air moved southward. Forecasters expect varying sunshine as the system weakens later this week.
Refugees from Sao Jorge began arriving on other Azorean islands as a rescue fleet evacuated the quake survivors. The first 510 islanders left Sao Jorge on American and British ships and were landed on Terceira. Heavy seas with 30 foot waves slowed the operation as ships returned for more evacuees.
In Dallas 2 more jurors were excused in Jack Ruby's murder trial for stating they would not vote death for Ruby if convicted. They were J. L. Richardson, 36, and Jesse R. Jones, 59. With no jurors seated yet, the panel of 750 plus 150 alternates may be reshuffled next week.
The Norwegian freighter Fruen rescued three crew members from the 7,308-ton British merchantman Ambassador after a 24 hour North Atlantic storm. Four to six more remained aboard as rescuers sought survivors amid 25 foot seas and 40 knot winds.
Miss Lucy Baines Johnson daughter of President Lyndon B Johnson will serve as Queen of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival April 30 May 1 2 making the first Texan and the President s daughter to hold the title The White House confirmed her role and she will stay with state Senator Harry Byrd Jr in Winchester Virginia during the visit.
A tax cut boosting take home pay was assured today as House and Senate conferees agreed on the largest reduction bill in history. Winchester Schools will reopen tomorrow after snow closure announced by Supt. Garland Quarles. County school decision pending at midday.
